Special exhibition: "Capa in Colditz" - Images of war photographer Robert Capa from the liberation of Leipzig

Colditz Castle is showcasing iconic images by war photographer Robert Capa (1913 – 1954) that commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Leipzig by American troops. Capa accompanied the troops from D-Day through France to Central Germany. The special exhibition, titled "Capa in Colditz", features 20 photographs and will be on display in the castle's vaulted cellar until the end of November 2026. Admission is free and accessible during the museum's regular opening hours.

The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Capa House in Leipzig. Starting September 1st 2025, Colditz Castle, with its historical photographs and legendary escape stories, will be hosted at the Leipzig Capa House. The images by Robert Capa will be provided by the International Center of Photography in New York. His photographs will be complemented in the exhibition by images that depict the day of liberation in Colditz. Among the American troops of the 69th Infantry Division was J. Malan Heslop, who, as a Mormon, was not obligated to engage in combat but had to serve as a reporter and photographer. He documented the liberation of the castle in just a few images.

Under the motto "If your pictures aren't good enough, you weren't close enough," Robert Capa also captured significant events during the Spanish Civil War and the Indochina War in Vietnam, where he was fatally injured by a landmine in 1954.

Admission is free, public, and without registration (Access to the vaulted cellar is located in the 2nd castle courtyard).
